Adventure Motorcycle Classification

Here is a list of our Adventure motorcycle classification. All these Motorcycles are street legal and will, or can, possess a license plate. Most rider customize their bike to meet the riding they love so there is can be a lot of gray area here, but you will get the idea. But with that said almost any bike can be used as an Adventure bike, people ride Harleys around the world as well as Honda C90’s. But it terms of our Adventure bike list – this is how we classified.

Dual Sport Light:2016_WR250_dual-sport

Typically classified as under 400cc and meant for single track or tight riding on dirt trails. Typically 250 to 300 lb range and have high fenders, knobbies, and long range suspension. Very little pavement riding on these dual sports.
90/10 – Dirt/Asphalt Ratio – depending on tires, suspension and overall setup.


Dual Sport Standard or Mid-Weight:

Typically classified as over 400cc and meant for quad trails or dirt roads. Typically around 650cc, 300 to 350 lbs, and love traveling graded paved roads and occasionally paved roads.
80/20 – Dirt/Asphalt Ratio – depending on tires, suspension and overall setup.

Adventure Standard: 2015_dr650_dual-sport
Typically classified as around 650cc and these bike are meant for asphalt as well as graded dirt roads. They are lightest of the Adventure bike classes.
50/50 – Dirt/Asphalt Ratio – depending on tires, suspension and overall setup.


Adventure Mid-Weight:

Typically around 800cc and these bike are meant for asphalt as well as graded dirt roads. They may have a windscreen for highway travel too.
50/50 – Dirt/Asphalt Ratio – depending on tires, suspension and overall setup.

 

Adventure Big Bike: yamaha-2013_XT1200Z_super_tenere
Typically around 1200cc and these bike are meant for asphalt as well as graded dirt roads. They will almost always have a windscreen as they are just as comfortable on the highway as a fire road. They alost always have panniers as they are expecting to be used for travel.
80/20 – Dirt/Asphalt Ratio – depending on tires, suspension and overall setup.

Adventure Touring: BMW-S-1000-XR
Typically around 1200cc and even above and these bike are meant for asphalt and possibly a campground dirt road. They will always have a windscreen as they are meant for highway travel with a hint of dirt road aptitude. They alost always have luggage/panniers as they are expecting to be used for travel.
90/10 – Dirt/Asphalt Ratio – depending on tires, suspension and overall setup.
